I need to return a dog that I adopted from PAWS. Can you help?

As with most rescue organizations, we require that you contact PAWS at pawsintake@gmail.com before giving away, transferring ownership, or otherwise surrendering your dog. We know our adopters will make every reasonable effort to resolve any issue that would prevent them from keeping their commitment to be their dog’s trusted owner for life. Should an unresolvable personal issue arise, or should your dog develop an extreme behavior that could not be resolved after working with an appropriate behavior professional, PAWS will require several weeks to locate a foster home for the dog.

I found a stray dog. Can you help?

State law requires that all stray dogs be taken to a county animal shelter so they can make further attempts to locate the dog’s owner. The dog will need to be held at the shelter (or possibly in your home or another foster home) for a holding period while there is an attempt to find the owner. The dog can be checked for a microchip at any veterinary office or shelter. We also suggest taking pictures and submitting to local lost and found pet Facebook groups and PetFBI.org Email pawsintake@gmail.com if you would like to surrender a found dog after taking measures to find the owner.

I need help with or need to find a new home for a dog that I didn’t adopt from PAWS. Can you help?

Though we’d love to help every dog in need, we have limited resources and are dependent on the generous contributions of our supporters. If we have available resources, we will do our best to assist you in finding a solution. If you need help surrendering a dog, email pawsintake@gmail.com with the information in the section below. Our general email address (contactus@powellpaws.org) will not respond to owner surrender requests. We have a limited number of fosters and will reach out if a foster home is interested. If you are interested in fostering the dog yourself, please consider listing your dog with Adopt-a-Pet’s Rehome service. You can list your dog and be in total control of the entire process. Please refer to our Rehome page for more details.

What information do you need to help me re-home my dog?

If we’re able to assist you by looking for a foster home or courtesy posting your dog on Petfinder, we’ll need you to provide the following information:

  • Several pictures of your dog
  • Dog’s name, breed, sex, age, and weight
  • Medical history (copies of vet records are very helpful), including whether your dog:
  • Has been spayed or neutered
  • Is up to date on rabies and distemper vaccinations
  • Has tested negative for heartworm disease in the past 12 months
  • Is on monthly heartworm and flea & tick preventatives
  • Description of your dog’s temperament – any issues with:
    • Strangers
    • Children
    • Cats
    • Other dogs
  • Any behavioral or medical issues a new owner should be aware of

Please send the above information to pawsintake@gmail.com .

You may also wish to consider posting your dog with Adopt-a-Pet’s Rehome service to increase the number of people who have visibility to your pet. See our Rehome Your Dog page for details OR go directly to Adopt-a-Pet Rehome to get started now.
